CO₂ heat pumps provide efficient district heating
Three air-to-water heat pumps from Fenagy A/S complete the district heating system’s portfolio in Vildbjerg, Denmark. Eight BITZER 8-cylinder reciprocating compressors operating with the refrigerant CO₂ ensure that the system is future-proof and highly efficient. With a capacity of 7 MW and a coefficient of performance of 3.4, the system provides heat for approximately 2000 consumers. Thanks to its two buffer tanks (7000 m³ of hot water), heat can be produced when electricity prices are low.

Project requirments
- Varying electricity prices
- Energy storage
- Flexible operation
Together with the energy storage, the CO₂ heat pump ensures great flexibility for switching the machines on and off depending on electricity prices, allowing the advantages of the fluctuating electricity market to be exploited.
