WHISTLE-BLOWER PROTECTION SYSTEM - BITZER INTEGRITY LINE
The company-wide BITZER whistle-blower protection system, BITZER Integrity Line, allows all employees of the BITZER Group, business partners and other third parties to report suspected and known violations of the BITZER Code of Conduct for Employees or the BITZER Code of Conduct for Business Partners as well as any violations of applicable laws – if desired, anonymously.
BITZER Integrity Line
Social Commitment
For us, sustainability is a global task. However, we are not only responsible for this at our company locations. We support activities and challenges that are important to us and to everyone all over the globe.
EMEA
We have been committed to supporting sporting events and youth activities for many years. We are not only active as the main sponsor and namesake of the BITZER Cup and as a sponsor for TuS Ergenzingen in Germany, but also in the United Kingdom as a sponsor of the U15 youth team Newport Pagnell Town FC Jaguars. In 2022, the Jaguars won the FA Berks and Bucks County Cup Final.
AFRICA
Promoting young talent, training specialists and supporting educational institutions is an integral part of our mission and values. At the end of 2021, we were able to donate a condensing unit, training materials and equipment to the Kisumu National Polytechnic Industrial School in Kisumu, Kenya. The equipment and manuals are needed by students in the school's refrigeration and air conditioning laboratory. We maintain close contact with the teachers at Kisumu National Polytechnic through our BITZER Kenya location.
In September 2020, we donated a condensing unit to AIC Kijabe Hospital in Kijabe, Kenya, to replace an old BITZER condensing unit from 1992. AIC Kijabe Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in Kenya, providing essential and quality healthcare in Kenya and the region.
Since 2020, we have been supporting the Great Green Wall project in Senegal to offset our carbon footprint caused by our annual dealer and customer meetings around the world. Seeds for trees, fruit and vegetables are mainly used for nurseries and, among other things, support women's groups to sell the fruit. The planted area covers 120 hectares in the valley of the Senegal River and in 12 surrounding villages.
ASIA
After having previously provided support in the form of CO₂ cascade test stands, this year again we support the students of the Bandung State Polytechnic (POLBAN), Indonesia, with academic scholarships, teaching and training materials for laboratory work and a modern condensing unit with our IQ module. The students use these to carry out practical field tests and research projects. The experiences and successes are shared in a pedagogical framework via webinars with the students of the following year. We also accompany webinars like this one, and those with a focus on energy efficiency and sustainability, at the Indramayu State Polytechnic (POLINDRA).
For the academic year 2021-2022 we are again awarding scholarships for excellence to students at Technical University of Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education, and Nha Trang University, Vietnam, as well as the Cambodia Industrial Technical Institute, Cambodia. The students and their courses focus primarily on environmentally friendly refrigerants and technologies with low GWP, for future solutions in environmental protection and high efficiency in air conditioning and refrigeration.
AUSTRALIA
In June 2022, we donated 100 trees to the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife, Australia. Since 1970, the foundation has followed its mission to protect Australia's wilderness and wildlife for future generations.
CHINA
Promoting young talent, training specialists and supporting educational institutions is an integral part of our mission and values. The annual competition of Chinese colleges in the HVACR industry has been held by the China Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association for many years, and we have been the sponsor for more than 10 years. This student competition is one of the largest and most significant competitions in the major subjects of heating, refrigeration, air conditioning and ventilation in Chinese universities. Almost 4,000 students from 120 universities can take part in this competition each year and compete in three categories.

Senator h. c. Peter Schaufler, the former owner and CEO of the BITZER Group, founded THE SCHAUFLER FOUNDATION in 2005 to provide our company with a robust form of guidance over the long term and ensure that BITZER always remains an independent company. The foundation is also responsible for the SCHAUWERK Sindelfingen museum, which opened its doors in 2010. Now considered to be one of the most impressive private art collections in southern Germany, SCHAUWERK is regularly open for visitors.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
OUR PRODUCTS
Constantly improving the energy efficiency of our
products is our MISSION. In this way, we offer our partners solutions to reduce their energy consumption and make an important contribution to protecting our environment.
We have offered products with natural refrigerants for heat pumps, air conditioning and food production and sales since the 1980s and are always optimising them. Measured in kilograms per kilowatt of generated cooling capacity, the volume of materials used in compressors has also dropped by up to 20 per cent in many compressor series in recent years.
OUR SITES
We have been investing heavily in the efficient use of resources at our production sites for years. In the area of environmental and resource management, our German locations can look back on more than 20 years of successful EMAS certification, and our international locations on our ISO 14001 certifications.
We are working to achieve climate compensation at our locations in Sindelfingen, Rottenburg-Ergenzingen and Rottenburg-Hailfingen by 2030. These locations are already capable of generating up to 90 per cent of the electricity they need each year themselves with a mix of different energies. This mix includes sustainable energies such as rooftop photovoltaic systems at the Sindelfingen and Rottenburg-Ergenzingen locations, which generate up to 2.2 million kilowatt-hours of electricity each year. A wind turbine within view of the Rottenburg-Ergenzingen factory produces 400,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity every year and, in combination with purchased wind power, accounts for roughly 3.2 million kilowatt-hours of wind energy each year. In Rottenburg-Ergenzingen we also feature an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system, which generates electricity from waste heat that would otherwise go to waste. The system contains multiple BITZER components and was provided by ElectraTherm, our subsidiary based in the US. To help our customers and partners overcome the current challenges to improving the environmental compatibility of refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump systems, we offer seminars and training courses specifically on those issues that affect the field of refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump technology and will dominate the future of the industry. This includes, for example, the use of natural refrigerants.
At BITZER, we rely on a mix of different energies, including photovoltaics – like here at our company headquarters in Sindelfingen.
The rooftop photovoltaic systems at our Sindelfingen and Rottenburg-Ergenzingen locations generate up to 2.2 million kilowatt-hours of electricity each year.
Our site in Rottenburg-Ergenzingen also features an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system, which generates electricity from waste heat that would otherwise go to waste.
Our energy mix also includes the power produced by a wind turbine within view of our Rottenburg-Ergenzingen factory.
At our site in Castelo Branco, Portugal, we have also installed a solar system that reduces our carbon footprint by reducing our grid consumption by 32% in 2021. In addition, we were able to reduce our water requirements by 88% in 2021 through a water retention system and the transformation of our outdoor facilities.
Globally, the use of our energy-efficient original BITZER spare parts led to an estimated 56542 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent savings through compressor repairs and overhauls at our GreenPoint service points worldwide in 2021:
- North America estimated 4,107.60 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent savings
- South America estimated 14,598.72 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent savings
- EMEA estimated 27,697.70 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent savings
- APAC outside of China estimated 4,217.11 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent savings
- China estimated 5,921.30 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent savings
CERTIFICATIONS
EMAS - the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme - is a European environmental certification that examines corporate contribution to environmental protection and social responsibility.
The structure of the environmental management system in EMAS corresponds to the environmental management standard ISO 14001. In addition to ISO 14001, with EMAS we fully involve our employees and their processes for continuous improvement.
External, independent, state-approved and monitored environmental auditors regularly inspect our manufacturing sites for EMAS certification. In doing so, they pay attention to compliance with the formal EMAS rules, the company's environmental performance and whether the organisation achieves the goals it has set for itself. In this way, we ensure that we fully comply with all relevant environmental legislation and create added value for our partners and the environment.
With our current EMAS certification, we can look back on more than 20 years of successful EMAS certification in the field of environmental management. With our environmental management system, we also meet the requirements of EMAS III.
For more information about EMAS, please visit the EMAS website.
EcoVadis is one of the world's largest rating and certification providers for sustainability and corporate responsibility. The EcoVadis platform is designed to help companies better manage and communicate their company's CSR performance in a clear and traceable way.
The EcoVadis Sustainability Rating assesses business activities in the areas of the environment, labour and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement.
BITZER Kühlmaschinenbau GmbH has been EcoVadis certified since 2022 in order to formalise and externalise our commitment, our activities and projects in the areas of sustainability and CSR. This enables us to keep the management of our CSR processes up to date and enables our partners to continuously monitor our CSR commitment.
For more information about EMAS, please visit the EMAS website.
We take the security of your data and the data of our partners very seriously.
BITZER's own data centre at the BITZER headquarters in Sindelfingen, Germany, was certified in 2022 by TÜV Informationstechnik GmbH (TÜViT) according to TSI.STANDARD V4.3, Level 2 and conformity to EN 50600.
This means that we belong to an exclusive group of companies that have a very secure data centre.
The criteria catalogue TSI.STANDARD reflects the current state of the art and standards and is constantly being developed and improved. In doing so, TÜViT is guided by the measures recommended by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). With EN 50600, everything is audited by TÜV Nord, from general concepts, building construction and redundancies in the power supply, to the regulation of ambient conditions via cooling systems with BITZER compressors, to the entire building's wiring, security systems and energy consumption. The cooling system in our data centre has a redundant structure. Both our screw and our scroll compressors are in operation.
