BITZER compressors for the refrigerants propane R290, propene R1270 and other hydrocarbons were subjected to a risk assessment by a notified body. The assessment took place on the basis of EU Directives 2006/42/EC, 2014/34/EU and 1999/92/EC and other regulations for product safety, operating reliability, accident prevention and the relevant standards such as EN378.

Provided that the system has been designed in accordance with recognized rules and standards, operated as intended, and maintained and serviced by qualified personnel, the risk associated with the use of BITZER compressors is assumed to be extremely low.

Open drive compressors are in most cases subject to the regulations for hazardous zones. This requires additional safety measures and electrical operating equipment in special Ex design for increased safety.
