The clearly structured trade fair stand was a visitor magnet.
• High demand for frequency-regulated compressors
• The trade fair location in Nuremberg attracts industry experts
Sindelfingen, November 16, 2012. "Discussion at Chillventa has again confirmed that our customers are increasingly basing their investment decisions on the life-cycle costs of a system, demonstrating that we’re on the right path with our energy-efficient innovations such as the NEW ECOLINE reciprocating compressors and CSV frequency-regulated screw compressors," explains Michael Bauer, BITZER Chief Sales and Marketing Officer.
After three successful trade fair days and numerous exciting and informative conversations with customers, BITZER can again report positive results this year. The clearly structured BITZER trade fair stand was a visitor magnet, and the 3-D presentation of the compressors inside the black and green cube was a highlight for all guests. The subsidiary company Lodam was also featured for the first time in its own section of the trade fair stand and enjoyed a high volume of visitors as well. The new products attracted the most attention: the NEW ECOLINE reciprocating compressor range, the innovative CSV range, the LE condensing units, and the ORBIT 6 scroll compressor series all boast high energy efficiency, a wide range of applications, and low life-cycle costs."Chillventa promotes valuable networking among industry experts. We received a great deal of positive feedback and now have numerous suggestions to consider. We also managed to persuade many high-quality applicants of BITZER’s reputation as a future-oriented employer. We are extremely satisfied," Michael Bauer adds.
Total Cost of Ownership is the main topic of the current BITZER customer magazine.
Sindelfingen, November 9, 2012. The main topic of the current issue is Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Background reports, interviews, and practical examples inform readers about the benefits of a quality-oriented examination of total costs – and how they can profit from it.
The monothematic magazine from BITZER, “compact,” underlines core issues, provides inspiration, and encourages readers to join the discussion. Driven by the technical and strategic challenges presented by the refrigeration and air conditioning industry, the editorial team sheds light on exciting topics from various perspectives twice a year.
Compact and easy to understand, the new “compact” 2/2012 shows how important the “non-costs” are when it comes to technical capital goods – namely, expenses that would not be incurred by making a carefully planned and forward-looking investment. Such expenses include follow-up costs for error rates that are too high, maintenance intervals that are too short, extensive repair costs, or energy consumption that is too high. The systematic examination and calculation of these costs is known as Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) or Life-Cycle Cost (LCC).

Progress across the board: the NEW ECOLINE series
Proven reciprocating compressors now even more versatile
• Increased energy efficiency
• Increased cooling capacity
• Extended application limits
• Genuinely backwards compatible
Sindelfingen/Nuremberg, October 9, 2012. At Chillventa in Nuremberg, BITZER is presenting the complete NEW ECOLINE reciprocating compressor series, from 4 to 221 m³/h. The compressors are now even more versatile and available for other refrigerants than R134a – for example, R404A, R407A, R407C, R407F, R507A, and hydrocarbons. With the new series, BITZER is transferring all the advantages of the proven ECOLINE series for R134a refrigerant to an even broader range of applications, in order to provide customers with significant added value.
The extensive ECOLINE series stands out with higher efficiency levels and simultaneously expanded application limits – and can still fit into existing systems as a replacement.
The coefficient of performance (COP) was improved throughout the series. In terms of the usual nominal points, by 6%; at low condensing temperatures, which are important for seasonal efficiency, the increase was even up to 12%.
The compressors with motor version 2 are now universal refrigeration compressors – for full applicability in low temperature applications and medium temperature applications with, for example, R404A up to 0°C evaporation temperature, and even at tropical ambient temperatures. Motor versions 1 or 3 are provided for heat pumps, medium temperature applications with R134a, and special applications.
Each ECOLINE is compatible with its predecessor compressor, with an unaltered mounting hole pattern and the same pipe connections – with efficiency gains even when repairing existing systems.
ECOLINE is also improving all VARISPEEDs and the well-known air cooled and water cooled condensing units. As an optional accessory, BITZER offers tried-and-tested capacity control systems for the entire ECOLINE series. In addition, all ECOLINE compressors are suitable for operation with external frequency inverters.
World premiere: new air cooled BITZER condensing units
The future-proof outdoor solution
• A new standard in energy efficiency
• Quiet operation (adjustable up to 45 dB(A))
• Easy installation
• 16 models with a cooling capacity of 7.5 to 32 kW (NK)
• Effective micro-channel heat exchanger and EC fans
Sindelfingen/Nuremberg, October 9, 2012. Whether medium temperature, low temperature, or process cooling – the newly developed BITZER condensing units for outdoor use are real all-rounders. The innovative and highly efficient complete units boast particularly low noise levels – and are also easy to mount.
At Chillventa in Nuremberg, technology leader BITZER will present its latest innovation for the first time: the LE condensing units. All 16 models have highly efficient BITZER NEW ECOLINE reciprocating compressors as standard, with a cooling capacity of 7.5 to 32 kW (50 Hz). The bonus: durable corrosion-resistant aluminium heat exchangers in a modern micro-channel design increase the power density.
Highly efficient and “ErP compliant”
In general, the new condensing units already meet the efficiency criteria currently under discussion for the future European ErP Ecodesign Directive for condensing units (ErP: Energy-Related Products). The Ecodesign Directive calls for increased energy efficiency in energy-using equipment in order to achieve the 20-20-20 objectives set by the EU. Thanks to sealed compressor sections and quiet EC fans, they are impressive with their especially low noise emissions of an (adjustable) maximum of 45 dB (A).
Easy installation
The highlight: in the factory, BITZER engineers fine-tune the components to work perfectly with each other. This means that the air cooled condensing units come ready-wired and piped to their destination. This reduces the time required for assembly on-site. In addition, one person can maintain the entire system. The technician can gain easy access to all components in the hot-dip galvanised and powder-coated weather protective housing, without any special tools whatsoever. This reduces maintenance costs.
Top energy-efficiency levels in the new CSV series
• Compact screw compressor with integrated frequency inverter boasts an especially large range of control and high power density
• The CSV series sets new standards with an especially high ESEER (air cooled)
• An all-rounder for air conditioning systems, heat pumps, and process cooling
Sindelfingen/Nuremberg, October 9, 2012. Variable speed with integrated frequency inverter is the key to top energy efficiency in the new CSV series from BITZER. With an ESEER (European Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) of over 5, the new intelligent compact screw compressor sets new standards for air cooled chillers with dry expansion.
The frequency inverter is integrated into the compressor in the CSV series, carefully finetuned in the factory, and configured for maximum efficiency. The compact unit takes up little space and meets the requirements of the EMC directive for industry, optional for residential areas. Thanks to the refrigerant-cooled electronics, maximum operational reliability and maintenance-free operation are ensured. This significantly reduces life cycle costs.
Minimal network load
The starting current is very low due to the soft-start function of the internal frequency inverter. Starting creates a steady increase in the operating current, without the usual current peak.
Versatile
CSV series models are highly efficient specialists used in chillers for air conditioning systems, in heat pumps, and in industrial and process cooling. The CSV compressor becomes an all-rounder thanks to its wide speed range and internal Vi-slider. The CSV series compact screw compressor communicates with the master control via Modbus.
Always under control
All CSV series models know their application limits. If preset parameters are exceeded, a warning message is first sent to the master system controller in order to enable correction. It only turns off in the case of constant or greater exceedance. The operator thus achieves maximum availability with minimum risk. The CSV series can of course also be combined with conventional BITZER CSH and CSW compact screw compressors in one system. This once again increases the flexibility with regards to full and part load performance both in system design and in operation.
BITZER currently offers three models in the CSV series, which are all designed for use with R134a refrigerant. The performance data:
|
Cooling capacity (to = 5°C, tc = 50°C) |
up to 430 kW | up to 350 kW | up to 270 kW |
| Range of control | > 1 : 6 | > 1 : 5 | > 1 : 4 |
| Max. flow volumes | 712 m3/h | 582 m3/h | 449 m3/h |
New ORBIT 6 scroll compressor series
• High-efficiency compressors for air conditioning systems and heat pumps
• Compact with a wide range of applications
• Optimised for lowest possible annual operating costs
• Extremely low noise levels
Sindelfingen/Nuremberg, October 9, 2012. Thanks to the new ORBIT 6 scroll compressors, BITZER is expanding its range with a cooling capacity of between 27 and 51 kW at 50 Hz and climatic conditions. The five models in the scroll series with a delivery rate of between 20 and 38 m3/h (50 Hz) boast high isentropic efficiency levels over a wide range of applications and low noise levels. This makes the ORBIT 6 compressors specifically qualified for use in air conditioning systems and heat pumps.
The design of the compressor is based on the R410A refrigerant. The compact construction of the new series results from the special execution of the Oldham coupling. Likewise, ORBIT 6 sets new standards with low noise performance previously unattainable in this performance class.
All compressors are designed for HVAC applications with condensing temperatures up to 68°C, as well as for heat pump applications including extreme operating conditions of –20°C/+50°C. This makes ORBIT 6 the compressor series with the widest application range. BITZER delivers the ORBIT 6 scroll compressors in five capacity steps with 10, 12, 13, 15, and 20 hp.
Consistently energy-efficient
ORBIT 6 compressors are consistently designed for high energy efficiency in full and part-load conditions such as those resulting from the highly variable load and ambient conditions in climatic and heat pump applications. This results in very high EER, ESEER/IPLV, and SCOP values, leading to especially low annual operating costs. The compressors can be mounted directly onto corresponding mounting rails in connector systems. BITZER provides the appropriate mounting kits in the product range.

Traditional cooperation: for more than ten years already, BITZER and the Chinese company Songzhi, based in Shanghai, have been working closely together in the field of bus air conditioning. Just as much of a tradition is the annual meeting between the BITZER Board of Directors and the Songzhi Management, aiming to consolidate future cooperation in an atmosphere of partnership. The last meeting took place at the beginning of April this year - and was a great success: Peter Schaufler, BITZER CEO and Senator h. c., Helmut Meyer, Director Transport Products, and Stephan Luerssen, Managing Director BRT, jointly signed a contract with Chen Fuquan, Chairman of the Board, and Ji Ankang, Managing Director of Songzhi, for a large-scale order for BITZER. Songzhi, a market leader with around 1,000 employees and a market share of more than 75 % in China's bus industry, placed an order with the specialist for refrigeration compressors for 30,000 four-cylinder and six-cylinder BITZER transport compressors. These reciprocating compressors will be mainly used in buses and coaches of the "Beijing Bus Company" and "Golden Dragon" companies.
Around 80 participants from wholesalers and BITZER subsidiaries of the Asian-Pacific area met in Hong Kong.
Growing in Asia
In the middle of May 2012, BITZER Refrigeration Asia held their biennial strategy conference in Hong Kong. Around 80 participants from wholesalers and BITZER subsidiaries of the Asian-Pacific area met there upon the invitation of Peter Schaufler, Senator h. c. and Chief Executive Officer of BITZER SE, and Gianni Parlanti, Managing Director of BITZER Asia. The conference focused on the wide range of new BITZER products and technologies: proven experts explained the benefits of the various products and presented success stories about solutions that have already been implemented.
On the occasion of the event, BITZER continued the tradition by nominating the "Distributor of the Year". This time, even two business partners received the coveted award: Eteco Engineering and Trading based in Kaohsiung and E Hong Trading from Taipei (both Taiwan). As very active members of the BITZER distribution network, they contribute significantly to the company's continuing success in the Asian market.
BITZER generally considers the Asian-Pacific region a growth market with high potential. The group of companies aims to continue its expansion in this market – through highly efficient, quiet, and reliable pro ducts for the refrigeration and air-conditioning industry.
Just as last year, even in 2013 BITZER is a co-initiator of the popular lecture series "infotour" on refrigeration technology. As a part of this lecture tour, the technology leaders BITZER, Danfoss, DuPont and Günter will present in detail their technical innovations and market trends. In the last years, the limited number of places were much sought-after. This is enough of a reason to register free of charge and without obligation on the new homepage www.infotour.pro and you will receive automatically the latest information regarding the locations and dates of the scheduled lectures. Moreover, the documents of the past "infotour" events can be downloaded.
Silke Schmidt and Elisabeth Brandau
All good things are three
75 kilometers over hill and dale - and in the end a lead of five seconds made all the difference: winning first place in the German Championship in Mountain Bike Marathon, Elisabeth Brandau successfully defended her title for the third time in a row. The master craftswoman in refrigeration engineering, who is also sponsored by BITZER Kühlmaschinenbau GmbH, won the race on 6 May just ahead of her team mate Silke Schmidt. "It is really nice to have repeated my success here in Singen and be the German champion in mountain biking", said the 26-year old who comes from Schönaich in Swabia, after the race. The win spurs her ambitions for the big goal in 2012: participating in the Olympic Games in London. "I want to compete with the best in the world this summer", she says, brimming with confidence. Support from BITZER as co-sponsor is both decisive - and obvious: not only does Elisabeth Brandau live in the vicinity of the headquarters of the compressor manufacturer, she is also a refrigeration engineer. With 23 she passed her master craftswoman's exam and then went on to complete her studies as a building energy consultant. Reason enough for the 3,000 employees at BITZER to wish her well on her way to London 2012.
Recognition for the top concept
Due to the high level of participation and the success in previous years, the Association of European Refrigeration Component Manufacturers (ASERCOM) is proud to announce once again the ASERCOM Energy Efficiency Award. The association would like to recognise an outstanding innovative concept for energy efficiency improvement. Over the lifetime of refrigeration and air conditioning systems, energy consumption makes a greater contribution to the production of greenhouse gases than HFC refrigerant direct emissions. In Europe, for example, such systems account for approximately 14% of the overall power consumption. Hence, efficiency improvement is our industry’s primary responsibility in the reduction of emissions. The award is granted for the most innovative energy saving concept or system in refrigeration/air conditioning, including heat pumps. An international panel of technical experts will evaluate the applications. Applications must present a new concept which is technically feasible and economically viable.

BITZER compressors cool Maersk containers
The BITZER Kühlmaschinenbau GmbH is the world's leading manufacturer of transport compressors in the field of refrigeration and air-conditioning. During the container exhibition Intermodal in Hamburg in early December 2011, BITZER and Maersk Container Industry (MCI), a subsidiary of the world's largest shipping line, Maersk Sealand, again signed a five-year contract.
The StarCool unit which is installed in containers for the temperature control of perishable goods such as foods, is the result of intensive cooperation between MCI and BITZER. The electronic controls for the unit are manufactured by the Danish BITZER subsidiary LODAM.
The total worldwide container market for compressors is approx. 130,000 units. BITZER and MCI have attained a market share of approximately 30 per cent within seven years after entering the container segment. This positive development will also continue over the next years. The basis is a five-year contract which increases the number of units from 45,000 in 2012 to 69,000 in 2016. Overall, BITZER will supply over 300,000 motor-driven aluminum compressors to Maersk during the five-year period.
Within the scope of the Deutschlandstipendium (Germany Scholarship) The Schaufler Foundation supports six students from Karlsruhe University and three students from the Technical University of Dresden. In the context of the “Deutschlandstipendium” talented young academics benefit from a monthly stipend of 300 Euros, raised in equal shares by the Federal Republic of Germany and private sponsors. With this scholarship The Schaufler Foundation supports gifted and ambitious students from the fields of mechanical engineering, energy technology and mechatronics, as well as information technology, international management and art history.
At the beginning of March the scholarship holders were able to get a first impression of BITZER. Hermann Renz and Ingo Smit gave an overview of the BITZER group and its products. After this introduction the students made a tour of the BITZER factory in Rottenburg where they watched the production of compressors. As an interesting contrast to the technical side, the group was guided through the SCHAUWERK in Sindelfingen in the afternoon.
Tried and tested reciprocating compressors can now be used
in an even more versatile range of ways
• Greater energy efficiency
• Enhanced cooling capacity
• Extended application limits
Sindelfingen, 27.03.2012. At the Mostra Convegno Expocomfort trade fair in Milan, BITZER will be unveiling its extended range of BITZER ECOLINE reciprocating compressors. These compressors can now be used for an even more versatile range of applications. In addition to R134a, many other refrigerants can also be used, e.g. R404A, R407A, R407C, R407F and R507A. With this new range, BITZER has succeeded in leveraging all the benefits of the tried and tested BITZER ECOLINE series for refrigerant R134a for an even broader range of applications, as well as offering its customers significant added value.
The extended BITZER ECOLINE range offers a great many product and efficiency benefits: With immediate effect, the compressors can deliver a 5-6% improvement in cooling capacity in medium temperature applications - and for low-temperature applications, these same compressors provide even more impressive improvements. At the same time, BITZER engineers have succeeded in increasing the coefficient of performance (COP) of this upgraded series by up to twelve percent for high as well as for low condensing temperatures. All compressors impress with substantially extended application limits when using refrigerant R404A and motor version 2 (medium and low-temperature applications), e.g. with condensing temperatures of up to +60°C and an evaporation temperature of 0°C.
Yet another attribute is the tremendous suitability of the new ECOLINE range for very favorable speed control by frequency inverter, a great bonus in terms of system efficiency. Irrespective of that, all 4 and 6-cylinder models can be equipped with cylinder head deactivation and this in turn delivers a very cost-effective form of capacity control. These measures already enable BITZER at this time to meet the foreseeable rise in requirements relating to energy consumption, while also meeting customer wishes for an exceptionally flexible range of compressors.
Versatile application options on a tried and tested platform
Thanks to the scope for using many of the commonly available refrigerants, these compressors cover a wide range of applications, and provide great added value to BITZER customers. BITZER ECOLINE compressors are used, for example, in medium and low-temperature applications in supermarkets, food storage facilities, condensing units, the chemical industry as well as large catering kitchens, the pharmaceuticals sector and in high-temperature heat pumps. All compressors in this upgraded range are based on the successful 2nd generation of semi-hermetic BITZER reciprocating compressors, for many years now a synonym for proven quality, great efficiency and reliability. For this recently upgraded range, BITZER has optimized the know-how gained from the successful ECOLINE series for R134a and made available for the use of other refrigerants. The tried and tested compressor platform has remained the same - which enables the updated BITZER ECOLINE range to completely replace the previous series. There are also no changes in the assembly hole pattern, the suction and discharge line connections and, in almost all cases, the valve position and installation space for the new series, compared to the standard range. This assures universal interchangeability.
In addition to the upgraded compressors in the ECOLINE range and the recently developed ORBIT 6 scroll compressors, BITZER will be unveiling a world first at the BITZER trade fair stand H29 K30.
• Ultra-efficient compressors for air conditioning systems and heat pumps
• Compact with a wide application range
• Optimized to achieve lowest possible annual operating costs
• Particularly low sound level
Sindelfingen, 27.03.2012. With the new ORBIT 6 family of scroll compressors, BITZER is attending the Mostra Convegno trade fair with an extended product range offering cooling capacity ratings of between 27 and 51 kW at 50 Hz and different climatic conditions. The five models in the scroll range with displacement ratings of between 20 and 38 m3/h (50 Hz) deliver their convincingly high isentropic efficiency rating across a broad range of applications with low levels of operating noise. That makes ORBIT 6 compressors particularly well suited for use in air conditioning systems and heat pumps.
The design of these compressors is based on refrigerant R410A which provides very high volumetric cooling capacity due to a number of factors, including a comparatively high level of vapor pressure. The compact design of the new series has been made possible by this feature and by using a special version of the Oldham coupling. ORBIT 6 also sets new standards with a level of quiet operation previously never before achieved in this performance class.
All compressors are designed for condensing temperatures of up to 68°C and for the operating point of -20°C / +50°C required for heat pump applications. That makes ORBIT 6 the compressor series with the widest range of applications.
BITZER supplies the models of the ORBIT 6 family of scroll compressors in five performance levels: 10, 12, 13, 15 and 20 hp.
Consistently energy-efficient
The design of ORBIT 6 compressors enables them to deliver consistent performance under full-load and part-load conditions, such as those that arise from the severely fluctuating load conditions and ambient conditions associated with air-conditioning and heat pump applications. This results in very high EER, ESEER/IPLV and SCOP values and correspondingly low annual operating costs.
The design and build of ORBIT 6 compressors are also ingeniously suited for installation in compounding systems. The compressors can be secured directly to corresponding assembly rails. BITZER offers the corresponding assembly kits in its delivery range.
Shilliday Refrigeration, winners of the Industrial and Commercial Project of the Year in the 2011 RAC Cooling Industry Awards, featured BITZER compressors in their winning installation. With the focus on energy-efficient solutions, Shilliday’s simple, but cost-effective idea for a new centralized refrigeration system at Hewitt Meats won the award.
Shilliday is one of Northern Ireland’s leading refrigeration and air-conditioning contractors and the project covered a new centralized refrigeration system featuring a conversion from R22 and R404A to R134A and the specification of a compressor pack, with four BITZER 4FE-25.2Y ECOLINE, R134A compressors. The facility for a fifth compressor was also included in the package by BITZER UK and supplied by RSL Ireland.
With a total capacity of 162 kW, the solution provided a COP of 3.0 in summer and 5.22 in winter. Electronic expansion valves, EC fans on condenser and evaporators and RDM controls were added to the system for improved efficiency. The solution resulted in a 19% drop in Hewitt’s energy bill over the period of a year, and a carbon footprint reduction estimated to be at least 80 tonnes a year.
Mountain biker Elisabeth Brandau on track to the Olympics in London
Elisabeth Brandau (27) has one great aim in life: As two-time German champion in the
Mountain Bike Marathon, she is determined to match herself with the best in the world
at the Olympics in London. And because qualification alone needs professional training,
she has established her own team – and BITZER Kühlmaschinenbau in Sindelfingen is her
co-sponsor. There are two very good reasons why BITZER has made this firm commitment.
On the one hand, the lady from Schönaich lives in the neighbourhood of the company
headquarters; and, on the other, professional interests bring both partners together.
To be exact, Elisabeth Brandau is a highly qualified constructor of refrigeration
equipment, an occupation which is usually a male domain. And given that the quota of
women is less than one percent, her development in the profession has been extraordinary;
at only 23 years of age she had already qualified as a master craftsperson, and then
went on to train successfully as a consultant in the building energy sector. With the
support of compressor manufacturers BITZER, the “Refrigeration Queen” is creating the
basis for successful qualification for the Olympics. Almost 3,000 BITZER people will be
keeping their fingers crossed, all the way to London 2012.
BITZER customers can now download the new version of the tried and trusted BITZER software from the website. The program provides data for BITZER compressors, condensing units and water-cooled condensers at a glance and offers an impressive level of user friendliness and wide choice of languages. Version 5.3.2 now also offers the following new features: it contains the data of the compressor series for transcritical CO2 applications and the liquid receivers of the A(NH3), K(CO2, R410A) and P(R290, R1270) series. It has also been extended to include the data for the CSH3 series and that of the new motor versions for ORBIT8 scroll compressors.
